Many rich people were throwing in lots of money (into the temple treasury). One poor widow came forward and put in two small copper coins worth a penny. Jesus called his disciples to him and said, “I assure you that this poor widow has put in more than everyone.” Mark 12:41-43
Jesus praised a poor widow for putting two small copper coins worth only a penny into the temple treasury. He claimed she put in more than anyone else. The disciples no doubt wondered if Jesus had flunked arithmetic. Rich people had been putting in thousands of dollars in silver and gold coins. Her two tiny copper coins were almost worthless. Then Jesus pointed out that the widow had put in all she had. Even in her extreme poverty, she gave everything.
You can’t give any more than that. Do you think Jesus measures our giving not by how much we give but by how much we keep for ourselves? A scary thought.
