Sermon Series: Discipleship 101: Our Textbook
September 5, 2021
Theme: If we see ourselves as disciples or students of Jesus Christ, what is our textbook? What was the text Jesus used? Although less than ten percent of persons could read in the first century, Luke tells us Jesus read from the Hebrew scroll of Isaiah to the people in the synagogue in Nazareth. Not only that, but Jesus was familiar enough with the scroll to unroll it to find the passage he wanted to read as the basis of his sermon. There were no page numbers, chapter, or verse numbers in Hebrew scrolls. Nor did Jesus own a biblical scroll which would have cost more than a house. He studied the scrolls at the synagogue. Jesus based his teachings on the biblical scrolls. He must have spent a great deal of time studying them. We Christians should seek to follow his example when it comes to studying our textbook which, for us, includes his Jewish Scriptures and the New Testament which contains the oldest and most reliable information about Jesus.
