Scripture: Psalm 67; Matthew 15:22-28
Sermon: Insiders and Outsiders
August 16, 2020
Theme: Jesus was a Jew. Jews looked down on other ethnic groups of their day (and vice versa). In our story Jesus seems to buy into the cultural bias he was raised in—refusing to help a woman who was not Jewish. But is that really what is going on in this passage? What about the people we naturally look down on? Do our biases corrupt our attitudes to others encouraging us to be judgmental? Is the church guilty of ostracizing and marginalizing others? Jesus challenges our tendency to keep some people outside while allowing others in.
