More than a year ago, a man died behind the church’s dumpster, a homeless man, a man who was troubled. We were unaware of his death until his mother and sister showed up to see where he had died. The police had informed his family that he died behind our dumpster. We were shocked. We had not noticed him. Perhaps the rich man never noticed poor, hungry Lazarus lying outside his gate. May God fill us with grace as we encounter others in need of mercy.
