“Suddenly a great assembly of the heavenly forces was with the angel praising God. They said, “Glory to God in heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors.” Luke 2:13-14
Were the heavenly forces speaking or singing? We usually assume the heavenly hosts
were singing. But were they? Luke says they were “… praising God. They said….” In
the Bible people praised God with words that were spoken, thought, chanted, shouted,
sung, and with or without words on musical instruments. A more important question is:
Why were the armies of heaven praising God? Because the angel had just announced
to the shepherds that the Savior—the Messiah, the Lord, had been born.
I don’t know about you but that still makes me want to praise God. To me the best way
to praise God is to sing. I am grateful we have so many wonderful Christmas songs we
can sing to celebrate and praise God for the coming of the Christ child.
