The popular Jazz at First Church made its debut on the Sarasota music scene in 1996. Initially known as “Jazz Vespers,” the series was patterned after similar programming of a Manhattan church. It was organized by local jazz enthusiast and church member Lucinda “Lucy” White. She formed a team with jazz pianist Fred Williams. Early seasons were held in the church chapel – thus “Jazz in the Chapel.” This series became an immediate success!
Our Patronage exceeded limited seating of the chapel. Jazz at First Church is now at home in our
beautiful sanctuary. Jazz concerts are Sunday afternoons, once a month, November thru April (4 and 5:30 p.m.). Our Jazz Trio, accompanied by guest musicians, performs at each concert and contributes immensely to the success of this annual series. Performers come from the rich traditions of the Sarasota jazz scene and enjoy national or international acclaim. Jazz at First Church features a full gamut of instrumental artistry. Performers bring an eclectic mixture of styles – jazz and hard-bop jazz, bossa nova, the swing tradition, and others. Their professional musical experience enables them to present programming rich in tradition and with excellence.
